Cultural Background

Found in the North-Eastern parts of Limpopo Province of South Africa near the town of Phalaborwa, the unique pattern used by Afrikania occurred wherever Tsonga and Pedi people were living together. Originally used to decorate clay houses, it was nearly lost to modern cement building methods. Research to date indicate that it developed through the use of elements from the two cultures.

»Such development could only take place in the presence of respect and admiration between different cultures – and that makes it a Symbol of Peace«, says Tom Joubert, founder of the project, who 'discovered' the pattern in Lulekani in 1995.

Each item is a unique piece of rare beauty, created as an individual interpretation by artists who were trained in the art of decorating with the pattern.

Using modern manufacturing technology, quality products ensure the preservation of these precious elements forever.
